yes, that means you, Direct Energy!
We have probably already had about 15+ people come by for this service. they walk in with their name tag, folder of important business papers, and the attitude that they are not salespeople: they are trying to save you money! either the people who solicit for Direct Energy do not bother to read anything about the company or about gas rates, or they simply are bold-faced liars. i can never tell, though i am a skeptic so i lean towards the lying theory. but then again, people can be pretty sheepish when they think it's easy money to be had by registering people.

"what's in the briefcase?" "papers. just papers. you know, my papers. business papers."
every time they walk in, i sigh heavily and, since about visit number ten, right to their face. folded arms, slightly furrowed brows, stare them in the eyes- it emphasises my disdain. i do this in hopes that they will sense my absolute exhaustion with them coming by and insisting to see our energy bills, and perhaps they will go away quietly.
today's visitor stepped quietly up the front hallway, so quietly that i barely heard him coming. i'd use the phrase "like a thief" but that's a little too obvious. anyway, he got to the front office door and i met him there. insert sighing and furrowing.
i knew this one would be easy because i could sense he had less confidence than me, which always makes the transaction a bit easier. i'm not really a big talker, and i try not to be rude, so it's sometimes hard to deal. he left because i said the boss was too busy to go over bills with him. sidenote: how can they just walk into a place of business and expect that you're going to drop what you're doing and waste twenty minutes with them?
a few months ago, i had a very adamant woman, she just wouldn't leave. i even became rude and purposely obnoxious and she still would not leave. "you are not interested in saving money?" she said, in this condescending tone which always wins a sale. i eventually just said, "we are not interested," and started back to my desk. she stormed out like a baby. bye.
anyone with fingers and a brain can find articles about how their "savings plan" is based on poorly constructed extrapolations. they do not revise their brochures, and they are not honest in what they say when they interrupt your work, or in their paperwork. they are a privately owned company that has a contract with the government of Ontario, so they are selling something- they are selling their service. next time they come in i am going to give the person a printout of that article.
i'm sorry, but that sign on the door, no matter how faded- the one that reads, "NO CANVASSERS/SOLICITORS" that does apply to you, Direct Energy people. go away or face the wrath of my eyebrows.
