so tonight we went to a play and as i was waiting there was this homeless guy begging out front. not being obnoxious, just wanting some change, whatever. after a bit a security guard came along and asked him to leave... but he was really being adamant. it was snowing and freezing and the guy was standing up slowly, getting his stuff together, putting on gloves, etc. obviously stalling, and the guard started trying to speed him up. so the guy said, "i can put on my gloves, can't i?" and grabbed his bike and was slowwwly making his way off stage left. it struck me as unnecessary and, uh, weird, i guess. here i was waiting to see a play about the christmas spirit and spreading goodness, looking out for your fellow human, and this dude who was a drunk, drug addict, i dunno, maybe just homeless was being shoved off 'cause it was poor appearance for him to be there. poor appearance for the reality of so many lives in this city. there but for the grace of fate go I.
he asked me for a smoke and i gave him one, in front of the guard who was still harassing him to leave. sometimes the funniest and most apt statements come at the strangest moments when the guy turned to the guard and said, "it's because of me you have your job."
i wanted to high five him and give him $20. on the side of the security vehicle it said, "for your protection." indeed.
perhaps it was my mood, also. a good mood helps a lot with perspective changes... just read some of my previous posts, heh.
completely unrelated, i wonder how many posts i've started with, "so...."?
