Codex Alimentarius.
Interesting. While a lot of articles I find on the topic seem to be very under-cited and paranoid, it is perhaps something to be paranoid about. I did go to the official site and read sections of the Codex over the past few weeks. What struck me as the largest issue is that there is no focus on educating people about their food choices and creating a mental link in individuals between proper consumption and health. This sort of ruling only serves to further remove the power of the people over what they choose. You choose sanitary, properly prepared KFC you're still choosing intestinal rot over health.
It seems to be presented under the guise of wanting to help people have access to "good quality" food on a global scale... but what constitutes good or quality? Are genetically modified foods riddled with pesticides considered good because they are mass produced, contain all vitamins and minerals that they should, and are readily available at a low cost? What is good and who decides on the standards of quality? Exactly.
Not to mention that if you've ever read anything about the meat packing industry alone, you'd know that rules and laws only apply to those who get caught (or who knowingly infect thousands with e-coli... and still continue to sell products, legally), and even then, only those without money enough for a good lawyer. Of course, there is no shortage of lawyers where the money trough doth dwell, so that is a moot point.
In the end, after reading many different articles, the Codex itself, and non-footnoted essays by crazy people, I have come to the conclusion that it isn't a good thing. In Germany, the price of dietary supplements is through the roof since they have adopted the Codex, which still does not prevent one from buying and taking toxic doses of vitamins which one has not researched.
So what's the point? More control, I think. Control of the food supply, slowly but surely. Control the food, control the people. Monsanto sure has that one down pat. I mean, it seems like a good idea, it says so in the preamble... so it must be, right?
