In response to a trail of emails about someone's religious concern over this play... ultimately, hate email forwarded to me. I just can't keep quiet against such ridiculousness:

My final response:

You know, all unfertilized eggs begin as female... then hormonal changes occur during fertilization that determines sex. Which is one theory behind why men have nipples that have no use whatsoever. In all of those cellular multiplications and divisions, is it not possible that there could be varying degrees of persons that come out? Nothing is an exact science, and you can't argue that point- even the Pope accepts the science behind prenatal development (and I have 20 books in front of me that show this if you'd like references), so in essence, humanity is inherently imperfect- the straights, the gays, the politicians... we're all a big ball of cells that somehow became what we are- conscious beings with free thought. The missing link? God, or whatever you call it: the great spirit, Allah, Quetzlcoatl, whathaveyou.
My point being we're all 'valid' humans no matter our preferences... we all have skulls living inside of our face, and hearts in our chest. If we are to ever have peace in this life, these attacks on one another have got to stop. Language is more powerful than any atomic bomb, so always choose words carefully and be sure to think them through before spreading hatred and anger. We have enough of that to go around.

I don't recall many of the bruises and scrapes from playing as a child, but I remember the face, voice and clothing of the guy who called me Paki in the schoolyard. Why? He didn't know what I was- I liked different things than him, I ate 'weird' food, and I was brown because my family came from Trinidad. So instead of say, hey, this person may enrich my life if I get to know them, he berated that which he feared in order to feel in control. Do you know what it's like to be belittled for who you are? Not what you choose, not what you do, but for simply being your own person? It sucks.

And I share this because of the implication that being gay is somehow degrading to the human race. "Degrading Jesus by portraying him as gay." Persecution is what degrades us all, as does prejudice and illusions of superiority.

Take care,
A.
