nostalgia tonight... thinking of rapids long made placid by the flow of things.
nothing that deep ever really disappears.
same solution, different shape.
different purpose, now.
yet still...

slumpity slump.
feeling the weight of life this week. uninspired to do anything real besides work and be lazy. i don't think i've even done any real photography in quite some time since my equipment is, well it's good for random shots, but you really have to work at it to make anything less than bright sunshine work well. it's depressing to not be able to afford anything camera related... maybe i should just take that $10k loan they keep mailing me about and buy everything and go from there, but that seems like a really stupid idea. it's just that it's something i'd like to do and am naturally good at, but i can't really do it as a career because i can't afford shit. not even a new lens, which would be a waste since i need a better camera first. ugh. money is the one thing i hate having to think about and yet it's the biggest focus in my life.
i suppose this CD album artwork thing i'm doing for a local band for my business might be a good start in the direction of saving for a new camera. it's so hard to think positively when you leave home in the dark and leave work in the dark and the weekends are grey, grey, grey.
every year i forget just exactly how this feels, but here it is again, and i'm sorely reminded. i feel disjointed and want to spend all my time in my room watching movies and eating bon bons. as well as a bunch of other private thoughts that need not be shared.
at least i'm old enough to know that in times like these when everything feels wrong it's a sign that nothing is actually wrong...
On a brighter note, i've been seeing a lot of random acts of kindness around the city as of late- maybe it always happens or maybe it's the season or my personal interest in people around this time of year, but it's happening. just the other day i was walking west on dundas where a UPS man dropped a couple boxes off of his dolly and a Man in a Black Suitâ„¢ stopped and picked up the boxes for him. a woman on the streetcar was having trouble getting her child redressed for outside and a stranger offered to hold her bags for her. a man was getting off the streetcar and someone got up to tap him on the shoulder and tell him he'd dropped his Altoids can. and many more i wish i'd written down as they occurred so as to remember...
it's not correct to say that the city is cold and heartless and that city people are that way, as well. it's just that the environment here is different so we generally act differently- but we mostly seem to still care about others, maybe even moreso, you could argue. i don't know, is it odd that i get teary when i see someone doing something nice for someone else without being asked? maybe, but i'm okay with it.

klaatu barada nikto.
My movie reviews are usually non-existent and consist primarily of the words "suck" "awesome" and/or "meh". However, after seeing the steaming pile of a remake movie on Sunday, I had to write a review to let out some steam.
On Thursday, AMC played the original The Day the Earth Stood Still and I watched it then to prep for seeing the new one. The original was very good, and had a point to make about the destructive nature of humans. It made the point very clear, and then Klaatu left earth with a warning. An open-ended finale to an issue for which there is no closure. Mend your ways or your planet will be destroyed. The original wasn't as much about the universe's need for a complex-life-sustaining planet, but about the violent nature we possess moving beyond the Earth into other planetary realms.
In the remake everything was lost. The special effects and CG were amazing, I don't argue that... but the story which made the movie (obviously, since the original was done in the 50s and certainly didn't have the options we have now) was entirely shredded. They kept in parts that were okay, but not essential, and cut out deal-breakers. Klaatu's final speech to the scientists at the end of the original, to quote The Dude, "really tied the room together". It gave everything context. The new movie? No final speech. No reason behind GORT (whose name is an acronym applied by the US Military in the new version) being there is given, and he doesn't make weapons disappear/disintegrate, he blows shit up. Once again, the robot that is supposed to keep peace among humans blows shit up- it's out of sync, you morons! Think, think before you make and spend millions.
Lest we forget the relationship built between Klaatu and the young boy was another important part the new version omitted. Klaatu was never dead set on destroying humans as the Keanufied rendition, he was on the fence the whole movie, the human race had to prove itself worthy of living... and it was the boy who convinced him that humans weren't all that terrible.
It also lacked any real climax, and what the fuck was with the spheres and the ark idea? So not right. I don't mind if you wanna remake something and change it a bit, but this should have been called something else because it was nothing at all like the original. Not to mention GET YOUR OWN IDEA AND STOP RUINING OTHER PEOPLE'S.
Anyway, as you can tell I'm really peeved and felt completely unfulfilled when we left the theatre- but at least we got to see the IMAX laser show!

I wonder if fans of the story were annoyed with the original movie version? heh.

having a cold + pms + shitty weather + not sleeping well + working anyway = meh.
here's to the weekend and the end of this mehness... heh...

so tonight we went to a play and as i was waiting there was this homeless guy begging out front. not being obnoxious, just wanting some change, whatever. after a bit a security guard came along and asked him to leave... but he was really being adamant. it was snowing and freezing and the guy was standing up slowly, getting his stuff together, putting on gloves, etc. obviously stalling, and the guard started trying to speed him up. so the guy said, "i can put on my gloves, can't i?" and grabbed his bike and was slowwwly making his way off stage left. it struck me as unnecessary and, uh, weird, i guess. here i was waiting to see a play about the christmas spirit and spreading goodness, looking out for your fellow human, and this dude who was a drunk, drug addict, i dunno, maybe just homeless was being shoved off 'cause it was poor appearance for him to be there. poor appearance for the reality of so many lives in this city. there but for the grace of fate go I.
he asked me for a smoke and i gave him one, in front of the guard who was still harassing him to leave. sometimes the funniest and most apt statements come at the strangest moments when the guy turned to the guard and said, "it's because of me you have your job."
i wanted to high five him and give him $20. on the side of the security vehicle it said, "for your protection." indeed.
perhaps it was my mood, also. a good mood helps a lot with perspective changes... just read some of my previous posts, heh.
completely unrelated, i wonder how many posts i've started with, "so...."?

oops
xmas things.
so unlike most years where i don't send much for most people, i've decided to send some xmas cards to relatives in a land far far away (my parents are going for six weeks). only the very important ones. tonight i am buying the cards and plan to fill them with memories most of these people have probably forgotten- the little things that make them special in your life. grandmas (no grandpas left), a couple aunts and uncles.
given my inability to confine my tears (ever), i anticipate i will need a kleenex box nearby when i am writing them.
to the cardmobile!
